What is a Soft Tissue Injury?

Home Glossary What is a Soft Tissue Injury?

A soft tissue injury involves acute trauma or microtrauma to muscles, ligaments, tendons, or fascia, resulting in pain, swelling, hematoma formation, and localized inflammation.

Classification of Soft Tissue Trauma

Soft tissues include skeletal muscles, tendons, ligaments, joint capsules, bursae, and myofascial sheaths. Acute trauma manifests either as direct blunt contusions (crushing capillaries and producing intramuscular hematomas) or indirect tensile strain/sprain failures.

Clinical Manifestations

  • Visible ecchymosis (bruising) and swelling from microvascular disruption
  • Palpatory tenderness and pain amplified by active muscle contraction or passive stretch
  • Functional impairment and guarded motion
  • Local tissue induration and inflammatory warmth

Immediate Evidence-Based Protocol: R.I.C.E. / P.R.I.C.E.

Early management dictates Protection, Rest, Ice application (15-20 min intervals), compressive bandaging, and limb Elevation above heart level to curtail intramuscular bleeding and tissue edema.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the typical soft tissue healing trajectory?

Minor contusions recover within 7 to 14 days, whereas high-grade myofascial or ligamentous tears require 4 to 8 weeks of progressive rehabilitative remodeling.

Should heat or cold be applied immediately?

Apply cold exclusively during the initial 48-72 hours. Heat causes local vasodilation, aggravating internal hemorrhage and edema.
