What is a Lisfranc Injury?

Home Glossary What is a Lisfranc Injury?

A Lisfranc injury affects the tarsometatarsal joints and ligaments in the middle of the foot and may involve a dislocation or fracture-dislocation. It can follow a fall, twist or sports trauma.

What Causes a Lisfranc Injury?

Twisting the foot while the toes are planted, a fall from height or a road accident can strain the Lisfranc ligament that links the bones of the midfoot. A low-energy sports twist can also shift the joint surfaces.

Symptoms

  • Rapid swelling across the middle of the foot
  • Deep midfoot pain when bearing weight
  • Bruising on the sole
  • Difficulty wearing a shoe or pushing off to walk

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Lisfranc injury just a simple sprain?

When there is displacement or a fracture, waiting for a simple sprain to settle can leave permanent joint malalignment. Weight-bearing X-rays and, when needed, CT or MRI help define the injury. Stable injuries may be immobilised, while unstable ones may need surgical fixation.
