What is a Hip Labral Tear?

Home Glossary What is a Hip Labral Tear?

A hip labral tear is a tear in the cartilage rim around the hip socket. Repeated impingement, hip shape abnormalities or a sudden twisting movement can damage the labrum.

What Causes a Hip Labral Tear?

Femoroacetabular impingement, differences in the shape of the socket or femoral head, repeated pivoting and sports trauma can overload the labrum. A tear may follow one event or develop after months of mechanical stress.

Symptoms

  • Deep groin pain that increases when sitting or rising
  • Clicking, catching or grinding in the hip
  • More discomfort after prolonged sitting or climbing stairs
  • Restricted rotation of the hip inward or outward

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a hip labral tear be seen on an X-ray?

X-rays assess the bones and possible impingement but do not show the labrum itself. Examination findings and, when needed, contrast MR arthrography clarify the diagnosis. Activity modification, physiotherapy and arthroscopic repair in selected patients are possible options.
