What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Home Glossary What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is irritation from overload of the thick band of tissue (plantar fascia) that runs from the heel bone to the toes and supports the arch, causing pain under the heel. It is the most common cause of heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

Prolonged standing, excess weight, a rapid increase in running distance, walking on hard surfaces, unsupportive shoes, tight calf muscles and Achilles tendon, flat feet or high arches all increase load on the fascia. A heel spur seen on X-ray is usually not the cause of pain but a result of long-term tension.

Symptoms

  • Sharp pain under the heel with the first steps out of bed
  • Pain returning when standing up after sitting for a while
  • Pain easing after some walking and returning at the end of the day
  • Tenderness on the inner underside of the heel

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does plantar fasciitis take to heal?

With calf and sole stretching, suitable shoes, heel cushions or insoles, weight control and load adjustment, most patients recover within a few months. Shockwave therapy and night splints are effective for persistent cases. Surgery is rarely needed.
