What is Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip?

Home Glossary What is Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip?

Developmental dysplasia of the hip means that the hip socket and femoral head do not develop normally or fit together fully in a baby or child. Early diagnosis supports healthy hip development.

What Causes Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip?

Hip development can be influenced by genetic tendency, position in the womb, tight swaddling and ligament laxity. Breech presentation, a family history and female sex may increase risk. Some babies have no obvious sign at birth.

Symptoms

  • Unequal leg lengths or asymmetric thigh and buttock folds
  • Limited outward movement of one hip during nappy changes
  • A click or clunk during hip movement
  • A limp or leaning gait in a walking child

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age is hip dysplasia detected?

The newborn examination is important, but some problems become clearer over the following months. Hip ultrasound is used for at-risk infants and X-rays for older children. A brace that maintains a safe hip position may be enough in early infancy; later diagnosis can require other treatments.
