What is a Scapholunate Ligament Injury?

Home Glossary What is a Scapholunate Ligament Injury?

A scapholunate ligament injury is stretching or tearing of the ligament that holds the scaphoid and lunate bones together after a wrist sprain or fall. Without treatment, alignment may fail and progressive wrist arthritis can develop.

What Causes a Scapholunate Ligament Injury?

Falling onto an extended hand suddenly stretches the ligament between the scaphoid and lunate. Twisting the wrist during sport or a forceful sprain can also damage it. A partial injury loosens the ligament, while a complete tear disrupts coordinated movement between the two bones.

Symptoms

  • Pain on the back of the wrist, often toward the thumb side
  • Ache that increases with gripping, push-up position or carrying weight
  • Clicking or catching when turning the wrist
  • Swelling and tenderness that become clearer at the end of movement

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a scapholunate ligament injury be seen on an X-ray?

The ligament itself is usually not visible directly. Comparison or stress X-rays can show a widened gap, while MRI and wrist arthroscopy provide more detail about the ligament. Early diagnosis matters because it can prevent permanent loss of alignment.
