What is Hallux Valgus (Bunion)?

Home Glossary What is Hallux Valgus (Bunion)?

Hallux valgus, commonly known as a bunion, is a progressive foot deformity where the big toe deviates laterally toward the second toe, creating a painful bony bump at the metatarsophalangeal joint.

Etiology and Pathomechanics of Hallux Valgus

Hallux valgus is a complex multi-plane deformity driven by genetic ligamentous laxity and exacerbated by constrictive footwear. Lateral angulation of the proximal phalanx forces the first metatarsal head medially, producing the characteristic prominence known as a bunion.

Associated Biomechanical Sequelae

As the first ray loses its load-bearing capacity, transfer metatarsalgia occurs, producing painful plantar calluses beneath the second and third metatarsal heads, frequently accompanied by hammer toe deformities.

Cardinal Symptoms

  • Painful bony prominence at the medial aspect of the first MTP joint
  • Erythema and bursitis caused by shoe friction
  • Stiffness and restricted dorsiflexion of the great toe
  • Secondary lesser toe deformities and difficult footwear fitting

Frequently Asked Questions

Can orthotic bunion correctors reverse bone deformity?

Splints and toe spacers offer temporary symptomatic relief by mitigating pressure, but they cannot structurally realign deviated osseous anatomy. Anatomical realignment requires corrective osteotomy.

Is immediate weight-bearing possible after modern bunion surgery?

With contemporary stable internal screw fixation, patients routinely walk immediately in specialized post-operative orthotic shoes without requiring cast immobilization.
