What is a Growth Plate Fracture?

Home Glossary What is a Growth Plate Fracture?

A growth plate fracture is an injury to the cartilage area that allows a child or teenager's bone to lengthen. The wrist, elbow, ankle and areas around the knee are commonly affected.

What Causes a Growth Plate Fracture?

Because growth plates sit near the ends of bones, a fall, a twisting sports injury or a direct blow can damage them. In children, ligaments may be stronger than the growing bone, so an injury that looks like an adult sprain can involve the growth plate. The fracture pattern determines whether growth may be affected.

Symptoms

  • Increasing pain and swelling at the injured area
  • The child refusing to use the affected arm or leg
  • Point tenderness directly over the growth plate
  • Deformity or limited movement when the fracture has shifted

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a growth plate fracture always visible on an X-ray?

No. Early injuries, especially those confined to cartilage, may look normal on an X-ray. If examination findings remain concerning, a splint, short-interval review and sometimes MRI or another scan may be arranged. Treatment and follow-up aim to protect the child's remaining growth.
