What is a Quadriceps Tendon Rupture?

Home Glossary What is a Quadriceps Tendon Rupture?

A quadriceps tendon rupture is a partial or complete separation of the tendon joining the front thigh muscles to the kneecap. It usually occurs when the knee bends suddenly during a jump, stumble or forceful landing.

What Causes a Quadriceps Tendon Rupture?

The tendon may fail when the quadriceps contracts forcefully while the knee is bending. Landing from a jump, stumbling on stairs or the knee giving way under a heavy load are typical mechanisms. Prior surgery, chronic disease or medicines that weaken tendon tissue can increase susceptibility.

Symptoms

  • A popping or tearing sensation just above the kneecap at the time of injury
  • Pain, swelling and bruising over the upper border of the kneecap
  • The knee suddenly giving way while trying to walk
  • Inability to keep the knee straight or raise the straight leg

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a quadriceps tendon rupture heal without surgery?

A complete rupture interrupts the extensor mechanism, so surgical repair is often recommended for active patients. A small, well-aligned partial tear may be managed with a brace and supervised rehabilitation. Prompt assessment helps preserve repair quality and the ability to straighten the knee.
