What is Spondylolysis?

Home Glossary What is Spondylolysis?

Spondylolysis is a stress fracture in the pars interarticularis, a bony bridge at the back of a vertebra. It is common in growing athletes who repeatedly extend the lower back and does not always lead to vertebral slippage.

What Causes Spondylolysis?

Repeated extension and rotation of the lower spine increases stress on the pars interarticularis. Gymnastics, football, wrestling and weightlifting can expose a growing spine to repeated loading before the growth plates have closed. A crack that begins on one side may later affect both sides.

Symptoms

  • Focal low back pain that increases with activity
  • Discomfort that becomes clearer when leaning backward
  • Stiffness in the back muscles and reduced movement
  • Pain that may reach the thigh but usually does not travel down the leg

Frequently Asked Questions

Is spondylolysis the same as spondylolisthesis?

No. Spondylolysis is a stress fracture in the bony bridge, whereas spondylolisthesis is forward or backward movement of one vertebra relative to another. Not every stress fracture causes slippage. Examination, X-rays and, when needed, MRI or CT assess healing and spinal alignment.
