What is a Joint Dislocation?

Home Glossary What is a Joint Dislocation?

A joint dislocation is an orthopedic emergency occurring when the articulating ends of two connected bones are completely forced out of their normal anatomical positions, disrupting stabilizing ligaments.

Understanding Joint Dislocations (Luxation)

A joint dislocation occurs when trauma separates bone ends from their mutual anatomical contact points within a joint capsule. This acute disruption severely stretches or tears stabilizing ligaments, the joint capsule, and occasionally compresses adjacent neurovascular structures.

Most Commonly Affected Joints

The glenohumeral (shoulder) joint is the most frequently dislocated joint due to its exceptional range of motion. Other susceptible sites include elbows, interphalangeal finger joints, the patella, and hips in high-impact collisions.

Key Signs and First-Aid Management

  • Obvious visible deformity and asymmetry compared to the healthy limb
  • Intense, immediate pain and total loss of joint motion
  • Rapid localized swelling and ecchymosis (bruising)
  • Distal paresthesia (numbness) or reduced pulses requiring urgent vascular evaluation

Frequently Asked Questions

Should a bystander attempt to reset a dislocated joint?

Never attempt manual reduction outside a medical facility. Non-professional manipulation risks permanent nerve laceration, arterial damage, and intra-articular fractures.

Why do shoulders frequently dislocate repeatedly after the first episode?

Initial traumatic dislocation often detaches the glenoid labrum (Bankart lesion), predisposing the joint to chronic instability requiring arthroscopic repair.
