What is Gonarthrosis (Knee Osteoarthritis)?

Home Glossary What is Gonarthrosis (Knee Osteoarthritis)?

Gonarthrosis is degenerative osteoarthritis of the knee joint caused by the progressive breakdown of articular cartilage, resulting in joint space narrowing, mechanical pain, and restricted mobility.

Pathophysiology of Knee Cartilage Wear

Articular cartilage cushions weight-bearing stress in the knee. Over time, factors such as excessive body mass, prior cruciate or meniscal trauma, and repetitive loading degrade this protective layer, leading to subchondral bone remodeling and osteophyte development.

Clinical Symptoms

  • Persistent joint-line pain aggravated by walking or stair navigation
  • Morning joint stiffness lasting under thirty minutes
  • Audible crepitus and friction sensation during flexion
  • Progressive angular deformity (varus alignment) in advanced stages

Frequently Asked Questions

Can knee osteoarthritis be managed without surgery?

Early-to-moderate stages respond favorably to weight management, physical therapy, viscosupplementation, and biological PRP injections. Severe bone-on-bone stages necessitate total knee arthroplasty.
