What is Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)?

Home Glossary What is Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)?

Tennis elbow is a painful tendinopathy of the wrist extensor tendons anchored to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus, caused by repetitive forearm stress and microscopic tendon degeneration.

Etiology of Tendon Overuse

Despite its athletic moniker, lateral epicondylitis predominantly affects manual laborers, computer workers, and musicians. Repetitive wrist extension subjects the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) tendon to excessive tensile strain, prompting angiofibroblastic hyperplasia.

Clinical Characteristics

  • Focal point tenderness over the lateral humeral epicondyle
  • Exacerbation of pain during gripping, turning doorknobs, or lifting items
  • Weakened grip strength accompanied by forearm fatigue
  • Pain radiation down the dorsal aspect of the forearm

Frequently Asked Questions

What conservative therapies heal tennis elbow?

Rest, counterforce bracing, eccentric rehabilitative exercises, radial/focused shockwave therapy (ESWT), and autologous PRP injections successfully resolve over 90% of chronic cases.
