What is Patellar Dislocation?

Home Glossary What is Patellar Dislocation?

A patellar dislocation occurs when the kneecap moves out of its groove in the thigh bone, usually toward the outside. A twist, injury to the inner stabilising ligament or knee alignment can lead to recurrence.

What Causes Patellar Dislocation?

A twist with the foot planted, a change of direction in sport or a direct blow can push the kneecap outward. Loose ligaments, a shallow groove, leg alignment differences and a previous dislocation increase recurrence risk. The inner stabilising ligament may also be injured.

Symptoms

  • The kneecap appearing out of place or shifted to the side
  • Rapid knee swelling and severe pain
  • Inability to bend or straighten the knee comfortably
  • Fear that the kneecap will slip again after recovery

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a patellar dislocation an emergency?

If the kneecap remains displaced, it should be reduced by a healthcare professional and X-rays should check for a bone fragment. A first dislocation is often treated with a brace and rehabilitation to restore control around the knee. Recurrent instability, bone abnormalities or cartilage injury may require surgery.
