What is an Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injury?

Home Glossary What is an Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injury?

An ulnar collateral ligament injury is stretching or tearing of the ligament on the inner elbow from repeated throwing or a sudden force that opens the elbow. It is common in baseball pitchers and racket-sport athletes.

What Causes an Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injury?

The ulnar collateral ligament resists forces that try to open the elbow during throwing. Repeated high-speed motion can weaken it over time, while a fall or forced opening can cause an acute tear. A sudden rise in throwing volume and inadequate rest increase the risk.

Symptoms

  • Pain on the inner elbow, especially during the acceleration phase of a throw
  • A tearing or giving-way feeling at the elbow while throwing
  • Loss of speed and control when releasing the ball
  • Tenderness inside the elbow and sometimes tingling toward the little finger

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an ulnar collateral ligament tear heal without surgery?

For partial tears, stopping throws, correcting elbow and shoulder mechanics, and graded rehabilitation may be enough. A complete tear, recurrent giving way or a high level of throwing demand may lead to discussion of ligament repair or reconstruction.
