What is Dupuytren Contracture?

Home Glossary What is Dupuytren Contracture?

Dupuytren contracture is thickening and shortening of tissue in the palm that bends the fingers, especially the ring and little fingers, toward the palm. Progressive disease makes it difficult to open the hand flat.

What Causes Dupuytren Contracture?

The exact cause is unknown. Thickened cords in the palmar fascia gradually pull the fingers into flexion. Family tendency, age, male sex and some metabolic conditions have been associated with it. Repetitive hand use alone is not a proven cause.

Symptoms

  • A firm and usually painless nodule in the palm
  • Inability to straighten the ring or little finger fully
  • A gap between the palm and a flat table
  • Difficulty shaking hands, wearing gloves or using a pocket

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Dupuytren contracture come back?

The condition may recur in the same area or affect other fingers after treatment. Mild cords that do not impair function can be observed. Progressive flexion may be treated with needle release, an injected enzyme or surgery; hand therapy helps maintain the result.
