What is Chondromalacia Patellae?

Home Glossary What is Chondromalacia Patellae?

Chondromalacia patellae is softening and wear of the cartilage on the underside of the kneecap, causing pain at the front of the knee, especially when going downstairs, squatting or rising after sitting.

What Causes Chondromalacia Patellae?

The kneecap glides in a groove at the front of the thigh bone. Poor tracking of the kneecap, weak or unbalanced thigh muscles, flat feet, excessive running and jumping, and a direct blow to the kneecap increase cartilage load and gradually soften it.

Symptoms

  • Dull pain behind and around the kneecap
  • Pain worsening when going downstairs, squatting or kneeling
  • Pain when standing up after sitting with bent knees for a long time
  • A grinding sensation or crackling when moving the knee

Frequently Asked Questions

Can chondromalacia patellae improve with exercise?

In early stages, strengthening the quadriceps and hip muscles, stretching, load adjustment and supportive insoles when needed clearly reduce pain. Persistent cases may be offered regenerative injections, while advanced cartilage damage or mechanical problems may need arthroscopic surgery.
