What is Kyphosis?

Home Glossary What is Kyphosis?

Kyphosis is an excessive forward curvature of the upper back that gives a rounded, hunched appearance. It may be flexible and posture-related or rigid due to vertebral deformity.

Types and Causes of Kyphosis

Postural kyphosis, common in teenagers, comes from prolonged slouched sitting and weak back muscles and can correct when standing up straight. In Scheuermann's kyphosis, vertebrae become wedge-shaped during growth and the curve is rigid. In older adults, osteoporotic compression fractures can also cause kyphosis.

Symptoms

  • A visibly rounded upper back with forward-falling shoulders
  • Back pain and fatigue after sitting for long periods
  • Forward head position and neck pain
  • Shortness of breath in very severe cases

Frequently Asked Questions

Can kyphosis be corrected?

Postural kyphosis largely improves with exercise and posture training. In growing patients with Scheuermann's kyphosis, a brace may be added to exercise. Surgical correction is considered for severe, progressive curves or uncontrollable pain. New rounding of the back in older age should prompt an osteoporosis check.
