What is Morton's Neuroma?

Home Glossary What is Morton's Neuroma?

Morton's neuroma is a thickening of a nerve in the ball of the foot, usually between the third and fourth toes, caused by compression and irritation. It produces burning forefoot pain and numbness spreading to the toes.

What Causes Morton's Neuroma?

The nerve running to the toes is squeezed between the heads of the metatarsal bones and under the ligament that links them. Narrow, high-heeled shoes increase forefoot load and compression. Running and other activities that repeatedly load the forefoot, as well as some foot deformities, add to the risk. It is more common in women.

Symptoms

  • Burning or stabbing pain in the ball of the foot between the toes
  • A feeling of standing on a small pebble inside the shoe
  • Numbness and tingling spreading into two adjacent toes
  • Relief when taking off the shoe and rubbing the foot

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Morton's neuroma treated?

Wide, low-heeled shoes and special insoles that offload the forefoot are the first step. Persistent pain may be treated with an ultrasound-guided injection. If symptoms continue for a long time, surgery to release the nerve or remove the thickened nerve tissue is considered.
