What is a Hamstring Tear?

Home Glossary What is a Hamstring Tear?

A hamstring tear is a strain or rupture of the muscle group at the back of the thigh that bends the knee and extends the hip, usually caused by overstretching during sprinting or sudden acceleration.

How Does a Hamstring Tear Happen?

In the late phase of running, the muscle is stretched while contracting forcefully; a load that exceeds its capacity tears the fibres. Poor warm-up, fatigue, muscle imbalance, low flexibility and a previous hamstring injury increase the risk. Football, athletics and dance are the most common settings.

Symptoms

  • Sudden sharp pain at the back of the thigh while running, sometimes with a popping sensation
  • Bruising at the back of the thigh within a few days
  • Pain when bending the knee or leaning forward, limping
  • In severe tears, a dip or gap near the sitting bone

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a hamstring tear take to heal?

Mild strains heal in a few weeks and partial tears usually within a few months with progressive rehabilitation. If ultrasound or MRI shows a complete detachment from the sitting bone, early surgical repair may be needed. Return to sport is planned after strength and flexibility tests are passed.
