What is Total Hip Replacement?

Home Glossary What is Total Hip Replacement?

Total hip replacement is surgery in which a hip joint damaged by osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis or fracture is replaced with artificial components for both the femoral head and the socket in the pelvis.

Who Needs a Hip Replacement?

Advanced hip osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, inflammatory arthritis, damage from developmental hip dysplasia and some hip fractures are the main reasons. It is considered when pain disturbs sleep, shortens walking distance and medication or physiotherapy are no longer enough.

What Happens During Surgery?

  • The damaged femoral head is removed and a stem is placed in the thigh bone
  • The socket in the pelvis is prepared and a metal cup is fitted
  • A ceramic or polyethylene bearing surface is placed between cup and head
  • Components are fixed with or without cement depending on bone quality

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I walk after hip replacement?

Most patients start walking with a walker and a physiotherapist the day after surgery. Within a few weeks they move to a cane and then to walking without support. Certain sitting and bending precautions are followed in the first weeks to reduce the risk of dislocation. Implant lifespan depends on activity level and bone structure.
