What is Spondylolisthesis?

Home Glossary What is Spondylolisthesis?

Spondylolisthesis is the forward or backward slipping of one vertebra over the one below it, which can cause low back pain and pain radiating into the legs.

What Causes Spondylolisthesis?

In young people, especially in sports that involve arching the back such as gymnastics, wrestling and football, a stress fracture of the bony ring at the back of the vertebra (spondylolysis) can let the vertebra slip forward. In older adults, wear of the discs and joints disturbs the balance between vertebrae and causes slippage. Congenital differences and trauma play a role less often.

Symptoms

  • Low back pain worsening with standing and bending backwards
  • Pain and numbness spreading to the buttocks and legs
  • Tight hamstring muscles
  • Shorter walking distance in advanced cases

Frequently Asked Questions

Does spondylolisthesis require surgery?

Most low-grade slips are controlled with core and back strengthening exercises, physiotherapy, activity adjustment and, when needed, a brace. Surgery to stabilise the vertebrae is considered for progressive slippage, persistent severe pain or weakness from nerve compression.
