What is an Achilles Tendon Rupture?

Home Glossary What is an Achilles Tendon Rupture?

An Achilles tendon rupture is a partial or complete tear of the strong tendon connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. It usually occurs during jumping, acceleration or a sudden change of direction.

What Causes an Achilles Tendon Rupture?

A forceful contraction of the calf during sprinting, jumping or a sudden direction change can overload the tendon. Previous Achilles tendinopathy, reduced tendon elasticity with age, a return to intense sport after inactivity and some medicines may increase risk. The tear commonly occurs a few centimetres above the heel bone.

Symptoms

  • A sudden kick-like feeling in the back of the calf
  • A pop or snap at the moment of injury
  • Difficulty pushing off while walking or rising onto the toes
  • A tender gap or indentation along the tendon above the heel

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an Achilles tendon rupture heal without surgery?

After diagnosis, the ankle may be protected in a cast or brace with the foot positioned carefully, or the tendon may be repaired surgically. The choice depends on the tear, age, activity goals and medical conditions. Early assessment, appropriate positioning and structured rehabilitation are important.
