What is Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?

Home Glossary What is Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?

Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs when the tibial nerve or its branches are compressed in the narrow passage on the inner side of the ankle. It can cause burning and numbness in the sole.

What Causes Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?

A cyst or vein, swelling after an ankle sprain, flat feet and inflammation around a tendon can compress the tibial nerve inside the tarsal tunnel. Sometimes no single cause is found, and symptoms worsen after prolonged standing.

Symptoms

  • Burning, tingling or electric sensations in the sole
  • Numbness spreading toward the heel and toes
  • Pain increasing at night or after a long walk
  • Weak foot muscles and poor balance in advanced cases

Frequently Asked Questions

How is tarsal tunnel syndrome diagnosed?

Examination looks for tenderness over the nerve and symptoms reproduced by positioning the ankle. Nerve conduction studies assess function, while ultrasound or MRI can show a cyst or tendon-related cause. Shoe and load changes, physiotherapy, selected injections or decompression surgery may be considered.
