What is a Joint?

Home Glossary What is a Joint?

A joint is the anatomical junction connecting two or more bones, enabling movement and mechanical support. It consists of cartilage, synovial fluid, ligaments, and tendons working as an integrated unit.

Types and Functional Roles of Joints

Joints are classified by mobility: synovial joints (fully movable such as knees, hips, and shoulders), cartilaginous joints (semi-mobile like spinal vertebrae), and fibrous joints (immovable skull sutures). Orthopedic medicine primarily addresses synovial joint pathologies.

Why Do Joints Degrade and Crack?

Aging, mechanical overload, sports trauma, and cartilage thinning remove protective cushioning. Direct friction generates pain, stiffness, and cracking sounds (crepitus).

Signs of Joint Dysfunction

  • Localized pain worsening with stair navigation or squatting
  • Audible clicking or grinding sensations during flexion
  • Joint stiffness after rest or in the morning
  • Effusion and localized swelling around the joint

Frequently Asked Questions

Can joint pain be resolved non-surgically?

Early stages respond favorably to rehabilitation, physical therapy, and viscosupplementation injections. Advanced structural wear requires surgical arthroplasty.
