What is a SLAP Lesion?

Home Glossary What is a SLAP Lesion?

A SLAP lesion is damage extending from front to back through the upper labrum of the shoulder, where the biceps tendon attaches. Repeated overhead activity or a fall onto the shoulder can cause pain, clicking and loss of strength.

What Causes a SLAP Lesion?

Repeated overhead use in tennis, swimming, volleyball and throwing places traction on the upper labrum. A sudden pull on the arm during a fall or shoulder dislocation can also injure the area where the biceps attaches. Age-related wear of the labrum may add to the problem.

Symptoms

  • Deep shoulder pain when lifting the arm overhead
  • Reduced performance during throwing or serving
  • Clicking, catching or grinding inside the shoulder
  • Weakness while carrying or pulling with the arm

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every SLAP lesion need surgery?

No. Adjusting activities, physiotherapy to strengthen the shoulder muscles and improving movement control help many patients. If symptoms persist, the examination is considered with MR arthrography; selected patients may need arthroscopic repair or surgery addressing the biceps tendon.
