What is a Turf Toe Injury?

Home Glossary What is a Turf Toe Injury?

Turf toe is an injury to the capsule and ligaments around the big toe joint when the toe is forced upward while the forefoot stays planted. It is common in sports played on firm artificial turf.

What Causes a Turf Toe Injury?

When an athlete accelerates or makes contact, the forefoot may stay planted while the heel rises, forcing the big toe joint upward. Flexible shoes, firm artificial turf and repeated push-off increase stress on the capsule and ligament complex. The injury ranges from a mild sprain to a complete tear.

Symptoms

  • Sudden pain beneath the big toe joint
  • Swelling and bruising around the joint
  • Difficulty pushing off through the big toe while walking
  • Pain and limited motion when lifting the toe upward

Frequently Asked Questions

When can an athlete return after turf toe?

Return depends on the injury grade and painless movement of the big toe joint. A mild injury may settle with a stiff insert, taping and gradual loading; a severe tear may need longer immobilisation or surgery. Running and cutting should progress only after walking, pushing off and sport drills are pain free.
