What is Bone Marrow Edema?

Home Glossary What is Bone Marrow Edema?

Bone marrow edema is a finding, usually seen on MRI, that reflects increased fluid and a stress response inside bone. It may accompany impact, repetitive loading, cartilage damage or certain joint conditions.

What Causes Bone Marrow Edema?

Loading a bone beyond its usual capacity, an impact, an early stress fracture, cartilage damage or inflammation can change fluid balance and circulation inside bone. The bright MRI area is not a diagnosis by itself; it is an imaging finding interpreted according to the underlying cause.

Symptoms

  • Deep bone pain that increases with weight bearing and eases with rest
  • Ache that persists at night or after activity
  • Restricted movement and difficulty loading the nearby joint
  • Focal tenderness and sometimes swelling after an impact

Frequently Asked Questions

Does bone marrow edema always mean a stress fracture?

No. It can occur with a stress fracture, but impact, cartilage problems and other joint conditions can produce the same finding. Examination, X-rays and MRI are considered together; reducing painful load and arranging controlled follow-up may be needed while the cause is clarified.
