What is an Olecranon Fracture?

Home Glossary What is an Olecranon Fracture?

An olecranon fracture breaks the bony tip at the back of the elbow where the triceps tendon attaches. It usually follows a fall onto the elbow or a direct blow and can impair active elbow extension.

What Causes an Olecranon Fracture?

A fall onto the elbow, a direct impact or sudden triceps pull can break the olecranon. The fracture may enter the joint, and separated fragments can weaken the force used to straighten the elbow. An open wound requires urgent assessment, including checks of circulation and nerve function.

Symptoms

  • Sharp pain at the back of the elbow
  • Rapid swelling and bruising
  • Inability to actively straighten the elbow
  • Tenderness over the bony tip

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an olecranon fracture heal in a cast?

Aligned fractures with preserved extension may be monitored in a splint. Separation or joint-surface disruption may require surgical fixation. Safe motion starts at the appropriate stage to limit elbow stiffness.
