What is Chondrosarcoma?

Home Glossary What is Chondrosarcoma?

Chondrosarcoma is an uncommon malignant tumor arising from cartilage-producing cells in bone or soft tissue. Persistent bone pain or swelling that gradually grows requires medical assessment.

What Causes Chondrosarcoma?

Most chondrosarcomas develop without a clear cause; some arise through change in a pre-existing cartilage lesion. The tumor may occur in the pelvis, thigh, shoulder region or ribs. Diagnosis combines imaging with tissue examination.

Symptoms

  • Bone pain that persists at rest or during the night
  • A firm swelling that gradually enlarges
  • Restricted movement of a nearby joint
  • Fracture when the bone becomes weak

Frequently Asked Questions

How is chondrosarcoma treated?

Treatment depends on tumor type, grade, size and location. An orthopedic oncology team uses MRI and other imaging to assess extent. For suitable patients, the main treatment is surgical removal with a margin of healthy tissue around the tumor.
