What is Blount Disease?

Home Glossary What is Blount Disease?

Blount disease is a growth-related orthopedic condition in which abnormal development of the inner upper shin growth plate causes the legs to angle inward. It may begin in infancy or adolescence.

What Causes Blount Disease?

When the inner growth plate of the upper shin develops unevenly under pressure, the leg axis turns inward below the knees. Early walking, excess weight and family tendency are associated factors, but the cause varies. One or both legs may be involved.

Symptoms

  • Progressive bowing below the knees
  • Feet turning inward while walking
  • Difference in leg shape or length
  • Inner knee loading pain in advanced cases

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Blount disease correct itself?

Mild infantile bowing may be observed during growth, but progressive or adolescent forms may not correct without treatment. Age, angulation and growth-plate appearance are assessed on X-rays. A brace or growth-guided surgery may be considered when needed.
