What is a Navicular Bone Fracture?

Home Glossary What is a Navicular Bone Fracture?

A navicular bone fracture affects the bone in the inner arch of the foot that helps support the midfoot. Repeated running load may cause a stress fracture, while a forceful injury can cause an acute displaced break.

What Causes a Navicular Bone Fracture?

Repeated loading during running and jumping can create a stress crack in a part of the navicular with limited blood supply. A fall from height or a crush injury can cause an acute break. Foot mechanics and a sudden training increase influence risk.

Symptoms

  • Point tenderness over the middle of the top of the foot
  • Ache that increases with running and jumping
  • Pain when pressing the navicular area
  • Limping when the injury becomes more advanced

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an X-ray show a navicular stress fracture?

Early X-rays may be normal. If examination remains suspicious, MRI can show bone swelling and the fracture line. Stopping impact, using a rigid boot and planning return to sport with imaging lowers the risk of failed healing.
