What is Sever Disease?

Home Glossary What is Sever Disease?

Sever disease is irritation of the heel growth plate from repeated pulling forces in growing children. It is a common cause of heel pain in children who run and jump frequently.

What Causes Sever Disease?

During growth, the heel growth area has not yet fully hardened. Repeated traction from the calf muscles and Achilles tendon during running, jumping and cutting can irritate it. A rapid increase in training or hard surfaces may make symptoms worse.

Symptoms

  • Pain in one or both heels after running or jumping
  • Tenderness when pressing the back and sides of the heel
  • A tendency to walk on the toes to avoid heel contact
  • Mild swelling and limping that become clearer after activity

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Sever disease cause permanent damage?

Usually not; the condition settles as the growth plate closes. During painful periods, pausing training, stretching the calf, using a heel lift and choosing supportive shoes can help. Activity should return gradually rather than before pain has settled.
