What is a Calcaneus Fracture?

Home Glossary What is a Calcaneus Fracture?

A calcaneus fracture breaks the heel bone at the back of the foot. It most often follows a fall onto the heels from height; joint involvement can alter foot shape and walking mechanics.

What Causes a Calcaneus Fracture?

A fall onto the heels, a road crash or a heavy object striking the foot can crush the calcaneus. The break may extend into the subtalar joint. With high-energy injuries, clinicians also assess the spine for associated fractures.

Symptoms

  • Severe pain beneath and around the heel
  • Marked swelling at the heel and ankle
  • Inability to bear weight on the heel
  • Bruising on the sole and sides of the foot

Frequently Asked Questions

When can someone walk after a calcaneus fracture?

Timing depends on the fracture pattern, swelling and treatment. Nondisplaced injuries usually need a cast or boot without weight bearing for a period. Joint depression may lead to surgery, and loading increases step by step as imaging shows healing.
