What is a Kneecap Fracture?

Home Glossary What is a Kneecap Fracture?

A kneecap fracture is a crack or complete break in the patella after a direct blow or a fall onto the knee. The patella is part of the mechanism that transfers thigh muscle force to straighten the leg.

What Causes a Kneecap Fracture?

Hitting a dashboard, a direct blow from a hard object or falling onto the knee can break the patella. A sudden strong pull from the quadriceps can rarely avulse bone. Separated fragments disrupt active knee extension.

Symptoms

  • Marked pain and tenderness at the front of the knee
  • Rapid swelling or blood around the patella
  • Inability to lift the leg while keeping the knee straight
  • Difficulty climbing stairs or rising from a chair

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a kneecap fracture treated?

A brace and controlled movement may be enough when fragments remain aligned and active straightening is preserved. Separated fragments or a disrupted extensor mechanism require surgical fixation, followed by gradual knee rehabilitation.
