What is a Medial Collateral Ligament Injury?

Home Glossary What is a Medial Collateral Ligament Injury?

A medial collateral ligament injury is stretching or tearing of the ligament on the inner knee that limits sideways opening. A blow to the outer knee can force the knee inward and overload this ligament.

What Causes a Medial Collateral Ligament Injury?

A blow to the outside of the knee forces it inward and stretches the medial collateral ligament. This is common in skiing, football and contact sports. A sudden change of direction or twisting while landing can also injure it alone or together with other structures.

Symptoms

  • Inner knee pain that starts after the impact
  • Tenderness and swelling along the inner joint line
  • A feeling that the knee may give way while walking or turning
  • Pain-related difficulty fully bending or straightening the knee

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a brace used for a medial collateral ligament injury?

Depending on the grade and stability, a hinged brace, controlled motion and rehabilitation may be advised. Most isolated injuries heal without surgery. If the meniscus, anterior cruciate ligament or bone is also injured, examination and imaging guide a broader treatment plan.
