What is Heel Spur and Plantar Fasciitis?

Home Glossary What is Heel Spur and Plantar Fasciitis?

A heel spur is a bony calcium deposit developing at the calcaneus insertion of the plantar fascia, intimately tied to chronic plantar fasciitis and repetitive mechanical strain.

Pathomechanics of Plantar Fascia Degeneration

The plantar fascia maintains the medial longitudinal arch of the foot. Inadequate footwear, prolonged standing on rigid surfaces, and biomechanical malalignment produce chronic microtrauma at the calcaneal enthesis, inciting secondary calcification.

Cardinal Symptoms

  • Intense, stabbing plantar heel pain with the very first morning steps
  • Pain flare-ups upon standing after seated rest (post-static dyskinesia)
  • Discomfort walking barefoot on unyielding surfaces
  • Pinpoint tenderness over the medial calcaneal tuberosity

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the bony spur itself need to be surgically excised?

Surgical excision of the bony outgrowth is seldom indicated. The primary pain source is inflammatory degeneration of the fascia, which responds predictably to ESWT shockwave therapy, custom biomechanical orthotics, and stretching.
