What is Shoulder Instability?

Home Glossary What is Shoulder Instability?

Shoulder instability is a tendency for the ball of the upper arm to lose its central position in the socket and partly or completely slip out. Injury to the capsule, labrum or ligaments after a first dislocation may be a major cause.

What Causes Shoulder Instability?

The shoulder has a wide range of motion because the socket is shallow and the capsule and muscles keep the joint centered. A traumatic dislocation can damage the front labrum and capsule. Repeated overhead activity, naturally loose ligaments or incomplete rehabilitation can also reduce stable control of the joint.

Symptoms

  • A feeling that the shoulder will come out when the arm moves back and out
  • A sudden slipping or dead-arm sensation during overhead sport
  • Fear of movement and stiffness around the shoulder after a dislocation
  • Recurrent insecurity after episodes of partial slipping

Frequently Asked Questions

Can shoulder instability improve with physiotherapy?

After a first episode without major bone loss, tailored exercises for shoulder-blade control and the rotator cuff can help. Recurrent dislocation, a labral tear or bone damage requires an orthopedic assessment to determine whether surgery should be considered.
