What is Fibromyalgia?

Home Glossary What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition with widespread muscle and soft tissue pain, fatigue, poor sleep and increased sensitivity to touch, in which pain processing changes without damage to joints or muscles.

What Causes Fibromyalgia?

In fibromyalgia, the nervous system amplifies pain signals (central sensitisation). It is more common in women. Genetic predisposition, long-term stress, irregular sleep, a previous infection or trauma may act as triggers. There is no structural damage in joints or muscles.

Symptoms

  • Widespread pain lasting over three months on both sides and in the upper and lower body
  • Unrefreshing sleep and morning fatigue
  • Forgetfulness and difficulty concentrating
  • Headache, morning stiffness, tingling in the hands and feet

Frequently Asked Questions

How is fibromyalgia treated?

Treatment is built on gradually increasing aerobic exercise, stretching and strengthening programmes. Sleep routines, stress management and, if needed, medication are added. Thyroid, rheumatic and spinal conditions that cause similar pain should be ruled out with examination and tests.
