What is the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)?

Home Glossary What is the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)?

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a crucial stabilizing ligament located deep inside the knee joint, preventing the shinbone from sliding forward and rotating abnormally relative to the thighbone.

Biomechanical Role of the ACL

The anterior cruciate ligament provides 85% of total passive resistance against anterior tibial translation and regulates rotational stability during sudden pivots and landings. Rupturing the ACL leaves the knee structurally unstable.

Signs of an ACL Rupture

  • Audible or felt 'pop' within the knee joint during injury
  • Rapid hemarthrosis and severe swelling within minutes
  • Inability to bear weight and a sensation of knee giving way
  • Significant loss of joint range of motion

Frequently Asked Questions

Is surgical ACL reconstruction necessary?

In athletes, young active patients, or individuals experiencing recurrent knee giving-way, arthroscopic ACL reconstruction is strongly recommended to protect menisci and prevent secondary osteoarthritis.
