What is a Femoral Neck Fracture?

Home Glossary What is a Femoral Neck Fracture?

A femoral neck fracture is a break in the neck of the thigh bone that supports the ball of the hip joint. In older adults it often follows a fall and weak bone, while high-energy trauma is more typical in younger people.

What Causes a Femoral Neck Fracture?

In older adults, osteoporosis, poor balance and a simple household fall can break the femoral neck. In younger patients, road crashes and falls from height are common mechanisms. The fracture can affect the blood supply to the hip joint, so assessment should not be delayed.

Symptoms

  • Severe groin and hip pain after a fall
  • Inability to put weight on the injured leg
  • The leg appearing shortened and turned outward
  • Pain increasing when the hip is moved

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a femoral neck fracture always need surgery?

Most patients are considered for early surgery to allow mobilisation and reduce complications. Depending on the fracture, displacement, age and general health, fixation with screws or a hip replacement may be appropriate. MRI can reveal an occult fracture when pain persists despite a normal X-ray.
