What is a Femoral Shaft Fracture?

Home Glossary What is a Femoral Shaft Fracture?

A femoral shaft fracture is a break in the long middle section of the thigh bone between the hip and knee. It usually follows high-energy trauma such as a road collision or fall and may involve major blood loss or other injuries.

What Causes a Femoral Shaft Fracture?

Because the thigh bone is strong, a fracture usually requires major force from a vehicle collision, a high fall or severe trauma. In older adults, bone-weakening conditions can allow a lower-energy fall to cause it. Blood vessels, nerves, skin and other injuries must be assessed urgently.

Symptoms

  • Sudden and severe pain in the thigh
  • Shortening or obvious bending of the leg
  • Rapid swelling and bruising
  • Inability to move the leg or bear weight

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a femoral shaft fracture treated?

Emergency care first addresses life-threatening bleeding and associated injuries. In most adults, the fracture is stabilized with a locked intramedullary nail placed through the marrow canal. The fracture pattern, soft tissues and general health determine whether a plate or another fixation method is more suitable.
