What is Mesotherapy in Orthopedics?

Home Glossary What is Mesotherapy in Orthopedics?

Mesotherapy is a treatment in which very small amounts of medication are injected just under the skin of a painful area with fine, short needles so that the effect occurs directly at the source. In orthopedics it is used for pain around muscles, tendons and joints.

How Is Mesotherapy Applied?

After the painful area is cleaned, small amounts of a medication mix are injected a few millimetres into the skin at set intervals using very fine needles. Because the medication is delivered close to the source of pain, much lower doses are needed than with oral treatment. Sessions are usually weekly and short.

When Is It Used?

  • Pain related to lumbar and cervical disc herniation
  • Muscle spasm and muscular pain
  • Tennis elbow and tendon problems around the shoulder and heel
  • Pain around arthritic joints

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions are needed?

The number of sessions depends on the condition and the patient's response; a short course of several sessions is typical. Mesotherapy works better together with exercise and physiotherapy. It is not used in case of allergy to the medications, bleeding disorders or skin infection in the area.
