What is Transient Synovitis?

Home Glossary What is Transient Synovitis?

Transient synovitis is a short-lived increase in inflammatory fluid in a child's hip, often after a viral infection. The child may limp or resist hip movement, but fever requires evaluation for other causes.

What Causes Transient Synovitis?

After an upper respiratory or other viral illness, the immune response can temporarily affect the hip joint. Extra fluid restricts movement. Symptoms often begin suddenly and may be felt in the hip, groin or front of the thigh.

Symptoms

  • Sudden limping on one side
  • Pain when rotating or opening the hip
  • Discomfort in the groin or front of the thigh
  • Usually no fever or only a mild temperature

Frequently Asked Questions

How is transient synovitis separated from a joint infection?

High fever, poor general condition, severe pain or refusal to move the leg requires urgent assessment for infection. Examination, blood tests and ultrasound are considered together. Mild cases usually improve within days with rest and clinician-guided pain control.
