What is a TFCC Injury?

Home Glossary What is a TFCC Injury?

A TFCC injury affects the triangular fibrocartilage complex on the little-finger side of the wrist, which carries load and stabilizes the forearm and wrist bones. Falls, twisting and repeated strain can cause it.

What Causes a TFCC Injury?

A fall onto the wrist, forceful rotation such as turning a screwdriver or repeated racquet-sport loading can damage the TFCC. Age-related wear may also make a minor strain persist. The tear location and whether the wrist is stable influence treatment.

Symptoms

  • Localized pain on the little-finger side of the wrist
  • Difficulty turning a handle or opening a jar
  • Clicking or grinding during forearm rotation
  • A sense of weakness when pushing up from a chair

Frequently Asked Questions

Which imaging test is used for a TFCC tear?

X-rays assess bone shape and the relationship between the forearm bones. MRI shows soft tissue, while MR arthrography may outline selected tears more clearly. Splinting, load modification and hand therapy may be used first; persistent symptoms or instability can lead to arthroscopic treatment.
