What is Scheuermann Disease?

Home Glossary What is Scheuermann Disease?

Scheuermann disease is a structural kyphosis in which the front of several vertebral bodies develops unevenly during growth, creating a rounded upper back. It is usually noticed in adolescence and is different from simple poor posture.

What Causes Scheuermann Disease?

No single cause has been proven. During spinal growth, the front of some vertebral bodies develops more slowly than the back, producing wedge-shaped vertebrae. Family tendency, growth rate and mechanical loading may contribute; it is not simply caused by sitting badly.

Symptoms

  • A rounded upper back that does not fully straighten when the person stands tall
  • Back fatigue after prolonged standing or sitting
  • Pain between the shoulder blades beginning during adolescence
  • A visibly uneven spinal line when bending forward

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a brace used for Scheuermann disease?

In a growing adolescent with a moderate curve, a brace may be considered with exercises to limit progression. Smaller curves may need observation and back strengthening alone. Marked deformity, persistent pain or balance problems can prompt a surgical opinion.
