What is Osteochondritis Dissecans?

Home Glossary What is Osteochondritis Dissecans?

Osteochondritis dissecans is a condition in which a section of bone and cartilage beneath a joint surface weakens and may separate because of repeated stress or reduced blood supply. It most often affects the knee in young, active people.

What Causes Osteochondritis Dissecans?

Repeated jumping, running and pivoting, stress on a growing joint, or a local blood-supply problem can weaken the bone beneath the cartilage. In the knee, the lesion commonly affects the inner part of the thighbone and a loose fragment may move within the joint.

Symptoms

  • Focal knee pain that increases with running or climbing stairs
  • Swelling and fullness after exercise
  • Catching or locking as the knee moves
  • Difficulty fully straightening or bending the knee when a fragment separates

Frequently Asked Questions

How is osteochondritis dissecans diagnosed?

The examination checks the pain location and joint motion. X-rays may show bone changes, while MRI gives more detail about early cartilage and bone involvement. In growing children with a stable lesion, reduced loading and follow-up may be enough; a loose or unstable fragment may require surgery.
