What is an Osteochondroma?

Home Glossary What is an Osteochondroma?

An osteochondroma is a benign bony growth that projects from the bone surface and has a cartilage cap. It is usually noticed during growth and may occur as a single lesion or as part of a multiple-lesion condition.

What Causes an Osteochondroma?

An osteochondroma develops when cartilage cells near a growth plate grow outward from the bone surface. Most are solitary and stop enlarging when growth ends. In hereditary multiple osteochondromas, similar growths occur in several bones.

Symptoms

  • A hard fixed lump beneath the skin
  • Friction with joint movement or footwear
  • Numbness or circulation symptoms from nerve or vessel pressure
  • Visible asymmetry that becomes clearer during growth

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an osteochondroma need to be removed?

Lesions without pain or pressure on nearby tissue can be monitored with X-rays. Orthopedic review is needed for restricted movement, nerve symptoms, repeated friction or new growth after maturity. MRI and removal may be considered when findings are uncertain.
