What is a Clavicle Fracture?

Home Glossary What is a Clavicle Fracture?

A clavicle fracture is a break in the collarbone, the bridge between the shoulder and chest. It commonly follows a fall onto the shoulder, a bicycle accident or a direct blow and causes marked pain around the shoulder.

What Causes a Clavicle Fracture?

A fall onto the outer shoulder, a bicycle or motorcycle accident, or a direct blow can break the collarbone. The middle section is most often affected, and muscle pull can separate the fragments. In children, the surrounding tissue may limit displacement.

Symptoms

  • Sudden, localised pain over the collarbone
  • Swelling, bruising or a visible bump around the shoulder
  • Pain when lifting the arm or bringing it across the chest
  • Tenderness and sometimes a grating sensation over the break

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a clavicle fracture heal in a sling?

Many fractures that remain aligned heal with a sling and controlled motion. Surgery may be considered when the bone threatens the skin, is markedly shortened or displaced, is open, or affects nerves or blood vessels. Contact sports should be avoided while the fracture heals.
