Back pain exercises are performed to ensure muscle balance, increase spinal mobility, and alleviate pain caused by daily physical stress. While proper exercises strengthen back muscles and balance the load on the spine, improper or uncontrolled movements may cause pain to increase. Therefore, it is of great importance to perform back pain exercises mindfully and regularly.

Exercises That Relieve Back Pain

Cat–camel exercise

With the hands and knees on the floor, the back is moved upward and downward in a controlled manner. This exercise increases the flexibility of the spine and helps muscles relax.

Knee-to-chest exercise

In a supine position, the knees are pulled toward the chest either one at a time or together. It provides relief by reducing tension in the lower back and back muscles.

Spinal rotation exercise

While lying on the back, the knees are bent and lowered sideways in a controlled manner. It supports lateral spinal movements and reduces stiffness.

Exercises That Strengthen Back Muscles

Bridge exercise

While lying on the back, the hips are lifted off the floor. This movement engages the back, lower back, and hip muscles together to support the spine.

Superman exercise

In a prone position, the opposite arm and leg are raised simultaneously. It increases the endurance of the back muscles.

Shoulder blade squeeze exercise

The shoulders are pulled backward, drawing the shoulder blades closer together. It strengthens the upper back muscles and improves posture.

What Should Be Considered When Doing Back Exercises?

The pain threshold should not be forced

If sharp pain is felt during exercise, the movement should be stopped immediately and not pushed further.

Exercises should be performed regularly and in a controlled manner

When exercises are performed irregularly, the expected benefits cannot be achieved. Weekly planning is important.

Warm-up and cool-down should not be neglected

A light warm-up before exercise and stretching movements afterward reduce the risk of injury.
